Why Moisture Beats Every Coating
Wood is like a sponge. It absorbs moisture and expands, then loses that moisture and contracts. It does this over and over, through decades of seasons.
Your coating doesn’t behave like that. It’s a thin stiff film that rests on top of a continuously deforming surface.
Something has to give… and it’s always the film.
Extension research doesn’t beat around the bush. Moisture is the most common cause of early paint failure on outdoor wood surfaces. It tops paint quality and application method.
This is why so many people give up trying to battle the cycle and just replace their deck boards with a surface that didn’t require a coating to begin with. Black composite decking is the popular choice because the colour goes all the way through the board rather than being painted on as a layer that will peel away. High quality composite decking boards are made from a wood fibre and recycled plastic mix that takes up minimal water, so you don’t need to sand back every year, there’s no re-staining and nothing for moisture to lift. This is especially important for black composite decking, because a dark stain applied on top of timber will always be the finish that fails first.

What Trapped Water Actually Does
Water that gets behind a coating doesn’t sit still. It works.
Trapped water attacks a finish in four ways:
- Hydrolyzes the adhesive bond — water penetrates between the coating and the surface causing the failure of adhesion between the two.
- It generates stress — the trapped water heats up from the sun and expands as vapour. That vapour wants to escape, and it does so by de-laminating your coating into blisters.
- It feeds fungi — wet wood beneath a film is an ideal environment for staining fungi and mould to grow, greatly accelerating failure.
- It absorbs through end grain — freshly cut ends soak up water like a straw.
That last issue in particular leads to many more failures than most realise. The visible face of the board appears to be sealed, while the ends that got cut retain moisture.
Study any peeling deck board or fence panel. Damage will usually begin at an edge, an end, a joint or a screw hole. It rarely starts in the middle of a board.
The Weather Problem Nobody Plans For
Now add British weather to the mix.
The UK experienced an estimated 164 rain days in 2024, with a total of 1,242mm rainfall measured — approximately 107% of the long-term average.
Think about what that actually means for a deck.
Essentially it is getting wet about once every two days and the timber seldom has a good opportunity to dry out and shed what it has soaked up.
Most exterior paints require a moisture level of 16% or less before application. Many decks across the country never reach that point except during a prolonged period of summer.
So the coating goes on… and the countdown starts immediately.
Why Dark Surfaces Fail First
Here’s something that catches a lot of people out.
Dark colored finishes age faster than light colored finishes. Nothing to do with pigment quality. All about heat.
Dark colours absorb much more heat than light ones. Under the blazing sun a black stained deck becomes scorching hot while the wood beneath is cool and moist. The exterior dries quickly but the inside remains moist and the moisture evaporates.
That vapour has to go somewhere. So it lifts the coating.
Say that 100 times each summer and you’ve got……… Splitting, cracking and peeling 🙂
That’s why black timber decks get such a bad rap for being maintenance intensive. And it’s also why black composite decking has so silently dominated gardens across the nation. With the board expanding and contracting due to moisture and heat cycling with no surface film involved, there’s no slick substance on top attempting to flake or peel off.
How To Stop Moisture Wrecking Your Finish
If you’re remaining with a painted surface, it’s easy: manage the water before you manage the paint.
Test The Timber First
Purchase a moisture meter. They are inexpensive and will save you an entire weekend of useless labor.
Drive the prongs in straight down so you don’t just touch the surface. Green wood dries on the outside and will give a false reading. That’s how people find themselves painting a board that’s wet in the center.
Above 16%? Wait.
Seal Every Edge, End And Underside
This is the step almost everyone skips.
Painting over the top face and neglecting the ends. It’s like putting a lid on a bucket with holes in the bottom. Always going to leak through the way that’s not painted.
Prime ends, edges and underside of every board prior to installation. Cut a board down the road? Prime the raw edge before installing.
Fix The Drainage Before The Finish
Standing water is the enemy.
Ensure there is an adequate drainage gap under boards, that air can flow under the frame and that there is nothing holding water against the timber. Planter boxes, mats and leaf accumulation are the most common offenders.
A deck that is able to drain and breathe will retain any finish longer.
Pick Your Window Carefully
Have several days of nice dry weather ahead before painting — then look at the forecast for following days too.
Spring and fall are enticing seasons because it’s not so hot outside. However the wood typically contains far more moisture than it appears.
The Bottom Line
Failures of outdoor coatings rarely occur because the product was inferior. They fail because water found its way under them and did not go away.
To recap the important bits:
- Timber moves with moisture, and rigid coating films can’t move with it
- Trapped water breaks adhesion, blisters the surface and feeds fungi
- End grain and cut edges cause most failures, not the board faces
- Dark finishes fail first because heat drives vapour outwards
- Moisture testing/sealing all edges is more important than what’s on the tin
If you manage moisture correctly, almost any good product will work. If you don’t, the highest dollar coating in the store will still blister next summer.
Or skip the coating altogether like many homeowners have and select a surface that doesn’t require one.
