Two numbers are in conflict on almost every cabinet job, and only one of them is written down.
The first set comes from the can. Benjamin Moore’s technical data sheet for Advance, the waterborne alkyd a great deal of cabinet work gets done in, lists dry to touch at 4 to 6 hours and recoat at 16 hours. It then says, in plain language, that full hardness and adhesion develop over time, and that you should not return shelves or tabletops to service for at least 3 to 5 days. The same sheet notes that reaching optimum hardness and final sheen can take up to 30 days depending on conditions.
The second number is the schedule. Doors come off Friday. They get sprayed Saturday. They go back up Sunday afternoon. By Monday night the kitchen is loaded again, plates stacked on shelves, doors swinging shut against frames, at roughly day two of a thirty-day process.
Then in March somebody notices the paint lifting along the edge of the door under the sink, and a chip beside the handle on the drawer everyone uses, and the assumption is that the painter used cheap paint.
Usually the paint was fine. The finish went into service before it had finished becoming a finish, or it went over something it was never going to stick to. Both are calendar and prep problems rather than skill problems, which is genuinely good news, because both are things you can ask about before you hire anyone.
Day zero: the grease you cannot sand off
Start with the failure that has nothing to do with drying at all.
Every cabinet door within six feet of a stove carries a film of atomized cooking oil. It is not visible, it does not feel greasy to a dry hand, and it has been accumulating since the cabinets were installed. Sanding does not remove it. Sanding warms it and drags it around, and sometimes works it deeper into the surface.
Primer applied on top of that film bonds to the film. It looks perfect. It passes every test you can run with your eyes. Then over the following months ordinary use puts stress on the bond, and the coating releases in sheets rather than chips, usually starting at an edge.
Benjamin Moore’s sheet is explicit about the requirement. Surfaces to be painted must be clean, dry, and free of dirt, dust, grease, oil, soap, wax, scaling paint, water soluble materials, and mildew. That is a separate operation from sanding, done with a degreasing cleaner and a rinse, and it is the first step to disappear when a job is priced to be fast.
Sherwin-Williams says the uncomfortable version out loud in the data sheet for Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel: any surface preparation short of total removal of the old coating may compromise the service length of the system. That is a paint manufacturer, in their own technical document, telling you that prep shortcuts cost you years. They are not warning you off the product. They are telling you what it needs.
Day zero, part two: glossy surfaces have to be dulled
The other half of prep is mechanical, and it gets skipped the same way.
Both data sheets require glossy surfaces be sanded dull before coating. Benjamin Moore’s instruction for previously coated glossy alkyds is to sand them. Sherwin-Williams says glossy surfaces should be sanded dull.
This matters more on cabinets than anywhere else in a house, because factory cabinet finishes are typically a conversion varnish or a catalyzed lacquer, and those are engineered specifically to shrug off moisture, grease, and impact. You are trying to make something stick to a surface designed to prevent things from sticking to it. Dulling the sheen gives the primer a mechanical grip to go with the chemical one.
If a contractor tells you they scuffed the doors, that is the right answer. It is worth one follow-up: what did you degrease with, and did that happen before or after the sanding? The order matters, and somebody who does this work regularly will answer without pausing.
Day one: sixteen hours means sixteen hours
Now the drying, where the compression usually happens.
Advance is dry to touch in 4 to 6 hours and ready for a second coat at 16. That gap is not a manufacturer being cautious. Waterborne alkyds dry by evaporation and then cure by oxidation, which means the film keeps changing chemically well after the surface stops feeling wet. Recoating early traps the tail of that process under a second film.
Two details make this worse in a real house than it looks on paper.
First, those times are measured at 77°F and 50% relative humidity. That is a laboratory. It is not a garage in northern Indiana in November, and it is not a Florida kitchen in August with the doors open. The sheet says directly that high humidity or cooler temperatures will prolong dry, recoat, and cure times, without saying by how much, because it depends on the day.
Second, there are limits on the surface itself, a minimum of 50°F and a maximum of 90°F at application. A garage project in February and a set of doors laid out in direct July sun both fall outside that window.
The takeaway is not that you should follow your contractor around with a thermometer. It is that a crew putting two coats on cabinets within a single day is not being efficient. In most conditions they are building in a failure you will not see for months.
Days three to five: the kitchen stays empty
This one is entirely on the homeowner, and it is the most ignored instruction in the process.
The sheet says not to expose the finish to heavy abrasion, and not to return shelves or tabletops to service, for at least 3 to 5 days.
In kitchen terms: no stacking plates onto shelves, no sliding a cast iron pan into a base cabinet, no bags hanging off knobs, and some care about how the doors get closed.
The mechanism has a name, and it explains why the damage appears where it does. Two soft coatings pressed together can adhere to each other, which is called blocking. It is why a door held shut against a freshly painted frame for a week can come away with the grain of the frame printed into it, or take a patch of finish with it. Nothing was applied wrong. Two films that were not yet hard were held in contact under pressure.
So the doors go back on, and then you leave them open a few days, or shim them at the top, and you live around your kitchen slightly longer than you wanted to. That is the actual price of the job lasting.
Days five to thirty: what full cure really means
The finish is usable long before it is finished, and the gap between those two states is where reputations are made and lost.
Depending on conditions, Advance can take up to 30 days to reach optimum hardness and final sheen. Through that first month the finish is unusually vulnerable to precisely what a kitchen does: hot pans, standing water, abrasive cleaners, adhesive bumpers, fingernails.
Which is how a cabinet job looks flawless at handover and mediocre by spring. The damage was done in the weeks after everybody agreed it was finished.
The behavior for that month is simple. Soft cloth and mild soap, nothing abrasive, nothing with solvent in it. No adhesive door bumpers, hooks, or shelf liner yet. Nothing taped to a painted face. And if the sheen looks slightly uneven under raking light in week two, wait out the month before deciding something is wrong, because final sheen is one of the things still developing.
What all this means when you are reading a quote
Everything above turns into four questions, and the answers tell you more than the price does.
How do you degrease, and with what? You want a product named and a rinse described, not the word “thoroughly.”
Do the doors come off and get sprayed in a controlled space, or get coated hanging in place? Both can work. Only one of them is compatible with a two day schedule, and it is not the one that produces the better finish.
How many days between coats? If the answer is same day, ask which product they are using and look up its recoat interval, since the data sheet is public and takes a minute to find.
When can we put the kitchen back together? A good answer contains a number of days and a warning about the first month. An answer of “as soon as we’re done” means the person quoting either does not know the product data or is content to hand you a problem that surfaces after they are gone.
Shops that run cabinet refinishing as a regular service, like Brothers Colors Painting in South Bend, build the calendar around those windows rather than around getting out of your kitchen quickly, because the alternative is going back to fix it at their own expense.
And the cheapest bid is often cheap for one specific reason. It is rarely cheaper paint. It is fewer days. Less degreasing, less dulling, less time between coats, and an earlier return to service. Every one of those saves money on the job and costs you the finish.
Ask for the days, not the price
Before you accept a cabinet quote, ask which product they intend to use. Then spend one minute finding its data sheet, which every major manufacturer publishes free and in public.
Compare two figures against the schedule you were just quoted: the recoat interval and the return-to-service window.
If the schedule is shorter than the sheet, you already know what those cabinets will look like next spring. The only real question is whether you find that out before signing or after.
